29th Jan 2014: Sam the Scorpion
In today’s Art + Board Games + Sharing Club we drew Sam and Steve the scorpions and their pedipalps (pincers) – thanks to our new ‘Draw Really Cool Stuff’ book by Doug DuBosque. Dylan then excavated the final 2 dinosaurs from a block of plaster so that we could progress to the accompanying ‘Dinosaur World’ board game.

Dylan: Will we be at Gran Canaria on a weekend?
Mum: Yes – we’re going for two weeks, so we’ll be there for two weekends. Why?
Dylan: Because there’s a girl at KidSize – Keeley – who’s going to Gran Canaria too! Well, she thinks she’s going to Gran Canaria.
Mum: Ah OK, but maybe not at the same time as us.
Dylan: Yes, she is! She’s going on Saturday, so she’ll be there next week.
Mum: Well that’s a coincidence isn’t it?
Dylan: Yes – and It’s great that we’ll be there over a weekend, because me and Keeley are going to meet up at the swimming pool at the weekend. Maybe.

BOOK OF DREAMS – Age 5
Son: It’s about a boy who dreams about being a spaceman. That picture on the cover’s the world. That yellow picture is the boy in bed – there’s the ladders. I know – it looks flat.
Mum: Why has he got 8 arms & legs?
Son: They’re not arms and legs! They’re on the bed – under the covers. They hold the bed up, otherwise why would he need the ladders?
Mum: Ah! Of course. What’s the story then?
Son: Once upon a time there lived a boy, he lived with his mummy and daddy. I was going to do it in chapters, then then I didn’t have time. Chapter 2 is when he had his dream and Chapter 1 is just telling you what’s first.

D: Do you know the story of the Wild Girl?
Me: No.
D: She was all alone in the world, but she’s clever! …How is she all alone? I thought you have to be born from adults.
Me: That’s right – so where are her parents?
D: I don’t know – we’ll find out when Mrs V reads the rest of the story.

D: I WISH I could go into space.
Me: What made you say that?
D: I just REALLY want to see all the worlds… They’re bigger than my bedroom aren’t they?
Me: Yes.
D: And they’re bigger than the house!
Me: Yes.
D: And they’re bigger than the world!
Me: Well, the world IS a world, so no.

D: I feel sick because I drank too much in the swimming pool. I don’t like one thing about swimming now, when I think about the water.
Me: You’re not meant to drink the swimming pool, you’re meant to keep your mouth shut when you’re under the water!
D: I did!
Me: So how did you drink the water if you had your mouth shut – did you take a straw in?
D: No… That would be silly!
Me: Perhaps you should have a snorkel next time?
D: Yes – that’s it! That’s a GREAT idea!
Me: Well… Snorkels and masks are for learning to dive, and you can’t learn to dive until you can swim a few lengths of the pool, first.
D: But diving‘s not allowed in the swimming pool.
Me: Diving INTO the water’s not allowed, but I’m talking about diving UNDER the water – sub aqua diving. I used to do that – it was great! There’s a whole different world under the sea – like in Finding Nemo, with all kinds of fishes swimming past.
D: Did you want to see a shark?
Me: Only if it was quite far away.
D: I bet you didn’t want to see a HUMPBACK WHALE? They’re the biggest creature in this world!
Me: Only if they were quite far away too.
D: Are they bigger than the sea?
Me: No – otherwise how would they fit IN the sea?!
D: Oh yes.

D: How big is this world?
Me: Huge! Not as big as Saturn and the other big planets, though.
D: It’s bigger than Pluto though.
Me: Yes – because Pluto’s a dwarf planet isn’t it?
D: No! It’s just small. Mercury‘s like Earth, but all the people are really hot.
Me: Are they?
D: Yes, because it’s the closest to the sun. But it’s OK, it won’t melt, because it’s a METAL planet – it’s made from metal. But all the people on it are sad because they can’t have Christmas.
Me: Why is that?
D: Because all the snow would melt. So it snows, and straight away it melts. So they can’t have Christmas.

D: I LOVE this pudding – it’s the best ice cream ever! I’m going to call it… ‘Chocolate Ice Cream Strawberry World’. No, I got that the wrong way round. It’s ‘Chocolate Strawberry Ice Cream World’ – no, I mean ‘Chocolate Sauce Ice Cream Strawberry World’.
Me: ‘…With a Wafer’?
D: No, I’ve ate the wafer.
…There’s only ONE strawberry left – now it’s just ‘Strawberry World’.
…Now it’s just ‘Spoon World’.
