Work of a snowy garden.

The gleaming garden glittered as snow laid itself on the countryside like white blankets.

Me: Look at those big grey clouds!

D: There’s a tiny triangle of blue over there – like a Dorito!

Me: My granny used to say: “If there’s enough blue to make a Dutchman’s trousers, it will end up being nice.”

D: There’s only enough to make a Dutchman’s shorts. Who is your granny?

Me: She died before you were born. She was G-G’s wife.

D: But that was ages ago and G-G’s still alive!

Me: Yes, he’s strong.

D: Well, he’s not strong with lots of muscles because he’s old, but he kept going.

Me: Yes – mentally, he’s strong.

D: Who was your granny’s mum?

Me: The lady on the front of the photo album with all the family pictures in it in our dining room.

D: Oh. And who’s Granny’s mum?

Me: Granny’s mum is my granny, the lady I just told you about who died before you were born.

D: Does my dad know Granny?

Me: Yes, he knows her from when we were married.

[Long pause]

D: Did you know that everyone in the world is family? They’re all joined up, because otherwise there would be people at the end without a mum and dad which doesn’t make sense – everyone’s from the same family. The person in that car in front is our family. And the random person in that car over there is our family too. And that person, and that person, and that person…

Me: Okay, I suppose that’s true – at some point back in time we must all be related somehow. Where did you learn about that?

D: Nowhere, I just thought of it for myself.

Day 6: Sunshine on a rainy day

6th Jan 2014: Just before the heavens opened… Again

It was my first day back at work today after the Christmas break and I’m pleased to say that I managed to grab a 30 minute walkabout at lunchtime – in between the gales and heavy downpours. There was even this gorgeous bit of sun that I found!
Worth 100 calories?

Giant sneezes
June 23, 2013

giantsneezesBoy: I had a dream last night – it was half BFG, half school. One of the bad giants visits Stony Stratford – he sees our school and and he says, “I’ve been looking for that school!”

He sees us playing in the bottom playground – year 1 and year 2 – and he guzzles up all of the children up. I’m sad because he’s eaten up all of my friends and who am I going to play with?

My friend Lucy is hiding and sewing bird feathers. I ask her if she can change me into a bird; giants don’t like birds – they make them itch ALL day! I go flying above the giant and the feathers drop off onto him and make him start sneezing. As he sneezes, all of the children he’s eaten explode out of him, through his fingernails. And it’s not even the end of break time, so we can carry on playing!

Wearing different hats
June 9, 2013

differenthatsSon: What do you think of my hat?

Mum: Which hat?

Son: My imaginary hat.

Mum: Ah – yes, It’s a fantastic hat.

Son: Everyone’s got an imaginary hat. We learnt about it at school today. When you look at something and think about it, it goes onto your hat.

Mum: When you look at what?

Son: Like that picture on the wall. I look at that picture and now it’s on my hat.

Mum: Ah – I see. Does the hat change?

Son: Whenever you look at things yes. If you don’t imagine them then it doesn’t change. Everyone in the world’s got one. But don’t make it too big otherwise you won’t fit through the door.

Mum: So is there just one thing at a time on your hat?

Son: No, you can think of all sorts of things at once and they come onto your hat all together.
Guess what? At school one person said “ice cream” for their hat, but that would just melt in the sun wouldn’t it? And it would drip all down their face!
And another person said “chocolate”, but that would get wet from the rain and melt in the sun, so Mrs W said, “Only take it out in the cloud!”

Sparkly tree

SPARKLY TREE
It’s a tree. We did it in winter when there was snow on the ground, because we couldn’t go out into the playground. We hoped to, but it was too snowy and the teacher wouldn’t let us. So, we stayed inside and did a picture of a tree. All the glitter’s snow, apparently.

Singing the Spring Song
April 22, 2013

springsongSon: It’s sunny! And I know why it’s sunny. In singing assembly yesterday we sang the Spring Song, because it wasn’t quite ready and we has to help it. That’s why it’s sunny today!

Oh happy day!
April 5, 2013

ohhappydayD: Do you know why today is going to be a happy day?

Me: Why?

D: Because, the sun is out and when I blink my eyes I see a happy face behind my eyelids – two eyes there and a big smile. So it’s going to be a happy day.

Me: That’s good.

D: …But then, do you know why it might not be a happy day?

Me: Oh, why?

D: Just LOOK at those BIG rain clouds. So it might not be a nice day… But maybe it will be a happy day this morning, when the sun’s out, and then a sad day this afternoon when it’s rainy.

Me: It won’t a sad day this afternoon – you’ve got Art Club!

D: But it will rain at play time! The rain clouds might think, “We should go away.” Or they might think, “We should get some water down there so they can live.” So there’s two choices.

Hidden meanings
March 12, 2013

hiddenmeaningD: The voice on the radio said it was 40 degrees today and she went put without a coat! So can I?

Me: No. It’s not 40 degrees – it’s quite cold today.

D: But she said it was STEAMING!

Me: People don’t always say what they mean.

D: She was, it IS hot – she said!

Me: Turn the radio off if you’re going to believe everything they say, and look outside – it’s icy – I need to defrost the car.

D: Oh yes… OK… they don’t always mean what they say…
