Purple vision

purplevisionSon: Why does the tree look all purple?

Mum: I don’t know, is it blossom that’s starting to flower?

Son: No, it’s because I didn’t get enough sleep. I’ve got purple eyes.

Do fish blink?
April 6, 2013

dofishblinkD: Do fishes blink?

Me: No, I don’t think so. We blink to keep our eyeballs moist.

D: What’s ‘moist’?

Me: Not dry – we blink to stop out eyeballs drying out, and fish live in water, so they don’t need to stop their eyeballs drying out.

D: But water can STING if you get it in your eyes, and THEN you have to blink.

Me: Water doesn’t sting – it’s a bit nothingy on its own. The fish are used to having it in their eyes.

D: What about the BABY fish? They won’t be used to having it in their eyes. Do they just come out, blink a few times and then they’re used to it?

Me: No. I don’t think they’re built with eyelids. They just have their eyes wide open all the time because they don’t need to blink.

D: Oh.

My goals – Feb 2013

D: My goals are… to be a scientist. That’s you [in blue]; that’s me, with a potion. I’ve got a snack in one hand – it’s an apple – and some of the apple has got into the mixture there, in red. That’s fog, above it, and they’re drops that are coming out of the potion. If you get any of the drops on you, you get more eyes. You’ve got six eyes and I’ve got nine eyes. They’re more bottles for experiments at the bottom.

Hair care
December 18, 2012

haircareMe: We need to cut your hair.

D: Yes. Ruby told me this: If you don’t cut your hair, it will all fall off and you’ll be bald!

Me: That’s interesting, but not right.

D: It is! Ruby never jokes or lies or fibs.

Me: That’s good, but it’s still not right; your hair grows through your scalp – the top of your head – it won’t all fall off just because you haven’t cut it. You wouldn’t be able to see very well if you never cut your hair though would you?

D: No. How do YOU see?

Me: I have a fringe – this short bit at the front.

D: You’ll have to cut it soon though , otherwise it will grow and grow and go onto the floor.

Tired eyes
October 26, 2012

D: You know when I had sleepy eyes in Crete? Well I know what they’re called now – Misha told me. They’re blood streams.

Me: Do you mean ‘blood shot’ eyes?

D: No, not ‘blood shot’, ‘blood STREAMS’! When you’re really tired they come in your eyes to let you know that you’re really sleepy. Do you know why they’re called blood streams?

Me: Why?

D: Because they’re made out of blood and they look like little streams, so they’re called blood streams.
