Ernie and his greens

Public Speaking Competition at School

D: Hello! Today I’m going to be talking about giant green sea turtles – and specifically one called Ernie [picture].

This amazing creature can live for up to 150 years – almost as old as your mum and dad!

Giant green sea turtles can be much much bigger than Ernie, who is about half as big as your car – and he is only 11!

Do you want to know why he’s called a GREEN sea turtle? Well, it’s because he eats lots of seaweed and greens – including brussel sprouts and broccoli – bleurgh! I don’t SEA (get it?) how he can eat those things. But, luckily (probably to take the taste away) he eats sea creatures like jelly fish.

The reason why his species are greatly endangered is because they eat plastic bags like children eat fast food – because he mistakes this rubbish for jelly fish, floating on top of the water. It gets right into their guts and it takes ages to break down – as you’ll know from learning about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

This makes the turtles think they are full, but they’re not getting any nutrition from the bags at all, so they die. And then….REST IN PEACE turtles [rip picture].

HEALTHY STUFF
“I can see healthy stuff.”
Age 5

It’s our kitchen. That’s the floor, with all of the tiles [along the bottom] and they’re the vegetables on the table.
They’re to remind me I need to have 5 portions of fruit and vegetables every day.
The long, sticky thing’s a cucumber; the pointy thing with a bush on top is a carrot; and the bushy thing with a stalk? Broccoli.

Meat & 3 Veg Burger
May 24, 2013

meatand3vegMum: What did you have for lunch today?
Son: Burger. I stuffed all my chips and salad in the roll with the chicken burger and then ate it!
Mum: I used to make funny sandwiches like that! Was it yummy?
Son: Yes! The peas and sweetcorn kept falling out though – because they do that don’t they?

A pea-sized portion

apeasizedD: Amy made a noise at lunch today and made my water go up and spill everywhere! And my food all went up in the air and then it came back down and all landed back on the plate in the same place – it just went up, and then back down.

Me: So Amy made you jump when you were holding your fish and chips at lunchtime?

D: Yes.

Me: I bet you haven’t had many portions of fruit and vegetables today – what did you have with your fish and chips?

D: Ketchup.

Me: Ah. Is that all?

D: And one pea.

5-a-day
July 9, 2012

Me: I explained to Dylan yesterday that he needs 5 portions of fruit and vegetables every day in order to be able to run fast. This information was so well received that today he would like “7 operations of fruit and vegetables please” 🙂
