Dylan: I want to give David a present. What can I give him? Can I buy him something?

Mum: No. You can make him something though.

Dylan: I’ve got a GREAT idea!

Mum: What’s that?

Dylan: We can do some painting again – you can do a picture for the cleaner, and I can do a picture for David!

Mum: OK. What will you paint?

Dylan: I’ll paint him a picture of the submarine we went on, because he’s not going on it.

Poor Dawn

poordawnBoy: What’s “dawn”?

Mum: Why – where did you hear about it?

Boy: It’s in The Little Mermaid – there’s this crown that her granny has arranged for her and it lets her breathe so she can go out of the sea and it says on that day, dawn broke.

Mum: Ah! It’s a time of day – “dawn” is just before the sun shows up and you say “dawn breaks” when the sun comes up over the horizon and the day starts.

Sea Life

It’s in the sea. There’s a fishy, there’s a fishy, there’s a fishy, there’s a fishy – 4 fishies. There’s a whale, a shark and a starfish.

Back flips – Mar 2013

D: Those shapes are the reflection on the top of the water and that’s the man at the top of the ladders. That’s the sun shining through the window, and that’s us swimming – there.

Sea treasures – Feb 2013

D: I wanted to draw under the sea – and the gems are treasure! There’s an island with a palm tree and treasure on it [bottom left]; those things that look like ‘B’s are the waves; and there are stars all around.

Water world

waterworldD: I feel sick because I drank too much in the swimming pool. I don’t like one thing about swimming now, when I think about the water.

Me: You’re not meant to drink the swimming pool, you’re meant to keep your mouth shut when you’re under the water!

D: I did!

Me: So how did you drink the water if you had your mouth shut – did you take a straw in?

D: No… That would be silly!

Me: Perhaps you should have a snorkel next time?

D: Yes – that’s it! That’s a GREAT idea!

Me: Well… Snorkels and masks are for learning to dive, and you can’t learn to dive until you can swim a few lengths of the pool, first.

D: But diving‘s not allowed in the swimming pool.

Me: Diving INTO the water’s not allowed, but I’m talking about diving UNDER the water – sub aqua diving. I used to do that – it was great! There’s a whole different world under the sea – like in Finding Nemo, with all kinds of fishes swimming past.

D: Did you want to see a shark?

Me: Only if it was quite far away.

D: I bet you didn’t want to see a HUMPBACK WHALE? They’re the biggest creature in this world!

Me: Only if they were quite far away too.

D: Are they bigger than the sea?

Me: No – otherwise how would they fit IN the sea?!

D: Oh yes.
