Son: Why does the tree look all purple?
Mum: I don’t know, is it blossom that’s starting to flower?
Son: No, it’s because I didn’t get enough sleep. I’ve got purple eyes.
D: You know when I had sleepy eyes in Crete? Well I know what they’re called now – Misha told me. They’re blood streams.
Me: Do you mean ‘blood shot’ eyes?
D: No, not ‘blood shot’, ‘blood STREAMS’! When you’re really tired they come in your eyes to let you know that you’re really sleepy. Do you know why they’re called blood streams?
Me: Why?
D: Because they’re made out of blood and they look like little streams, so they’re called blood streams.
D: Why isn’t Aidan coming to play at Daniel’s house?
Me: Because Aidan and his mum and dad get tired and go to bed very early at the moment.
D: Why do they get tired?
Me: Because Aidan’s new little sister isn’t sleeping very well at night.
D: Why isn’t she sleeping very well?
Me: I don’t know – it might be something to do with her coming out of her mummy’s tummy too early. Maybe her body wasn’t quite ready to come out and is trying to get used to being outside of her mummy’s tummy. She might be doing a lot of growing at the moment.
D: Has she got a skeleton?
Me: Yes.
D: Do you know – dogs have skeletons too… but they’re DOG shaped?!
