Crazy fish out of water
June 5, 2013

crazyfishSon: Next year, after this holiday – what’s the place called that we’re going to?

Mum: Gran Canaria.

Son: Yes, after Gran Canaria, can we go back to Crete?

Mum: We’ll see. I’d like to visit different countries. We could go to Egypt and you might be able to swim well enough to come snorkelling and see all the pretty fish under the water.

Son: But what about the sharks?

Mum: You don’t need to worry about sharks.

Son: I just imagined something! I imagined that we were in the sea and a shark was chasing us and we ran out of the sea onto the beach and the shark followed us – he stood on his flippers and walked onto the beach and then started singing “Gangnam Style” with a microphone!

Into a shark’s mouth
April 7, 2013

sharksmouthMe: You have 10 minutes left to get washed and brush your teeth!

D: I can’t do it.

Me: There’s no such thing as can’t.

D: There is – when you can’t do something!

Me: If you try hard enough you can do anything!

D: What about jumping into a shark‘s mouth?

Me: Well… I guess, if you train really hard and you get the right sort of shark – a pretend shark or a model shark…

D: What would be the point in that?

Me: Umm… art?

D: Maybe if it was a friendly shark it would let you back out again.

Me: Maybe – if it didn’t have teeth.

D: Yes – but all sharks have teeth!

Sea Life

It’s in the sea. There’s a fishy, there’s a fishy, there’s a fishy, there’s a fishy – 4 fishies. There’s a whale, a shark and a starfish.

Sea treasures – Feb 2013

D: I wanted to draw under the sea – and the gems are treasure! There’s an island with a palm tree and treasure on it [bottom left]; those things that look like ‘B’s are the waves; and there are stars all around.

Water world
January 9, 2013

waterworldD: I feel sick because I drank too much in the swimming pool. I don’t like one thing about swimming now, when I think about the water.

Me: You’re not meant to drink the swimming pool, you’re meant to keep your mouth shut when you’re under the water!

D: I did!

Me: So how did you drink the water if you had your mouth shut – did you take a straw in?

D: No… That would be silly!

Me: Perhaps you should have a snorkel next time?

D: Yes – that’s it! That’s a GREAT idea!

Me: Well… Snorkels and masks are for learning to dive, and you can’t learn to dive until you can swim a few lengths of the pool, first.

D: But diving‘s not allowed in the swimming pool.

Me: Diving INTO the water’s not allowed, but I’m talking about diving UNDER the water – sub aqua diving. I used to do that – it was great! There’s a whole different world under the sea – like in Finding Nemo, with all kinds of fishes swimming past.

D: Did you want to see a shark?

Me: Only if it was quite far away.

D: I bet you didn’t want to see a HUMPBACK WHALE? They’re the biggest creature in this world!

Me: Only if they were quite far away too.

D: Are they bigger than the sea?

Me: No – otherwise how would they fit IN the sea?!

D: Oh yes.

Bridge over troubled water
August 4, 2012

D: Mum, if bridges’ legs are under the water – what happens if a shark comes along and bites it?
Me: I don’t think sharks like to eat bridges – they’re not very tasty.
D: But what happens if they BITE it and then spit it out?

Tips for exploring our seas
July 22, 2012

D: I wish I could go to the Moon and explore.
Me: Maybe one day, but in a few weeks’ time we can go to Crete to explore – and that’s a different part of the Earth. AND we’ll be near a beach!
D: Yes, and we can take our fishing net and catch some fish! But we MUST be careful because, if our net gets heavy or breaks, it means we’ve accidentally caught a shark or a crocodile.
