Do something exciting
July 19, 2013

dosomethingBoy: Today nobody at school listened to me and I REALLY needed to tell them something!

Mum: What did you need to tell them?

Boy: I can’t remember, but NOBODY would listen!

Mum: Well, it’s a hot day and sometimes people get a bit grumpy on hot days and might not want to listen as much.

Boy: But I listened to THEM!

Mum: Sometimes you’ll just have days when you feel like nobody’s listened, unfortunately it’s part of life. I have that sometimes – some days I feel like nobody’s listened to me at work. What do you think I should do then?

Boy: [Thinks for a while]… You should get them to stop thinking about the hot sun by doing something exciting.

Mum: What might that be?

Boy: You could ask them if they wanted something to eat. Or to drink.

Mum: Sounds like a good plan – they’d have to listen if their mouth was full!

Cartoon eyes

cartooneyesMum: What are you doing? Being a chicken?

Son: No, I’m trying to do that thing like in Tom and Jerry when Tom locks Jerry out and he come in because he finds a hole that’s just the right size. Sometimes when Tom’s very confused, and he sees Jerry there’s this thing that he normally does: His eyes stick out one time; and then they stick out some more to there [uses hands to demonstrate] and then to there; and then to there; and then to there! It’s REALLY funny.

And then he chases Jerry around the room and then Jerry does bad things to him – like one thing he did was stick a pin right through his head – it went right through his brain, but he was still alive!

And once, there were some baby mouses, with nappies on and the mouses get some milk and they suck it into their mouths and pretend they swallow it but they actually don’t – they just swallow air and then they spit the milk out at Tom!

Mum: Do you think it’s fair that they do all that to Tom?

Son: Yes I do, because Tom tries to catch them and it’s Tom and Jerry so it’s meant to be like that.

Remembrance Day – Nov 2012

D: The poppies are so we remember the army people who got killed in the war. They’ve both got poppies: That’s the goody [on the right] – he’s got a red poppy; and that’s the baddy [on the left] – he’s got a black poppy.

Mountaineering parents

[Dream]
I was playing with children from Reception, and I asked the teacher if James had invited me to his party, because she had the list. She said “no”, she said “but your dad’s going”, and I can’t remember which other adult she said was going with him. At home time, all the other kids’ mums and dads had to say goodbye to them, because most of the adults were going to climb mountains for some days – only up to the snow bit ’cause they might fall off. Some children cried because they didn’t want their parents to leave. That’s the end of it.
