Flower power!
May 6, 2013

flowerpowerSon: We had our pictures taken today and we had a competition! But I didn’t win.

Mum: Oh? What was the competition?

Son: Whoever finds the best flower gets to show it in assembly. I didn’t get the best flower though.

Mum: What flower did you get?

Son: A bluebell.

Mum: I like a bluebell. What were the winning flowers?

Son: A dandelion, which was still yellow, a daisy and a holly leaf which had a berry on it because it was from a cold place. Mine was number 4, so I don’t get to show it. The teacher took my picture with me pretending to ring it like a bell, but it’s only the winners get their pictures printed – only 1, 2 and 3, so my picture didn’t get printed.

Mum: Well I would have chosen a bluebell! I think bluebells are lovely.

Son: Yes, and they REALLY DO ring like a bell – I looked inside and it had a hard ball, like a raisin inside.

Mum: A stamen?

Son: Yes – a stamen – and when I shook it, I listened REALLY hard and I heard a little tinkle!

Being good #2

beinggood2D: What does it say on that big piece of paper?

Me: ‘Your Ground Rules’

D: What does that mean?

Me: It’s the rules that the school children wanted to make when I was doing the speaking work with them.

D: What were their rules?

Me: One was that they wanted the group to all turn their phones off. Another was that they wanted the group to tell the truth about what they thought of each other’s speeches, but to be nice about it. Another was to be quiet and listen…

D: We have those rules at my school!

Me: What are your rules?

D: Be Safe; Be Kind; Be Helpful; Tell the truth; Listen – No, they don’t start with ‘be’ – every rule has to start with a ‘be’. But there IS a listen one, that starts with ‘be’.

Me: Be a good listener and be truthful?

D: Yes!
