Boy: I remembered one of the other songs we sang in the playground today – not Over The Rainbow or Doe a Deer. I don’t know what it’s called though – shall I sing it to you?
Mum: Yes, go on!
Boy: [sings] Every day, we learn and play, Finding ways to get along, Finding out what life’s about, Everybody moving on!
SPARKLY TREE It’s a tree. We did it in winter when there was snow on the ground, because we couldn’t go out into the playground. We hoped to, but it was too snowy and the teacher wouldn’t let us. So, we stayed inside and did a picture of a tree. All the glitter’s snow, apparently.
Age 5.
D: Do you know why today is going to be a happy day?
Me: Why?
D: Because, the sun is out and when I blink my eyes I see a happy face behind my eyelids – two eyes there and a big smile. So it’s going to be a happy day.
Me: That’s good.
D: …But then, do you know why it might not be a happy day?
Me: Oh, why?
D: Just LOOK at those BIG rain clouds. So it might not be a nice day… But maybe it will be a happy day this morning, when the sun’s out, and then a sad day this afternoon when it’s rainy.
Me: It won’t a sad day this afternoon – you’ve got Art Club!
D: But it will rain at play time! The rain clouds might think, “We should go away.” Or they might think, “We should get some water down there so they can live.” So there’s two choices.
Me: Look it’s been snowing again overnight – look at the cars!
D: Will there be snow at school today?
Me: Well yes – they might have cleared a path, but there’ll be snow.
D: Because the other day, a man came and sprinkled snow dust all over the place and it MELTED the snow into ice and we’re not allowed to play on the ice. There was just a line of snow left and all the children were on one side of the line and all you could do was walk – up, down, up, down, up, down, up, down on the line. It was sooooo boring!
D: We had to draw a picture of something we’re fantastic at.
I drawed that I’m fantastic at playing football. That’s me, with the ball in purple.
That’s the goal [in light blue, on the right], and I’m kicking the ball into the goal!
They’re all people who are trying to get the ball so they can get a goal, but they can’t!
