Birthday blues
February 20, 2013

birthdaybluesD: I WISH my birthday was today.

Me: I’m sure you do.

D: It’s just not fair that it’s not until June – that’s such a long time away.

Me: It will be here soon enough.

D: But I get so BORED waiting for it! Can we change it?

Me: Your birthday is one thing we can’t change – what are you going to do, get born again?!

D: Oh. No.

Mountaineering parents
October 24, 2012

[Dream]
I was playing with children from Reception, and I asked the teacher if James had invited me to his party, because she had the list. She said “no”, she said “but your dad’s going”, and I can’t remember which other adult she said was going with him. At home time, all the other kids’ mums and dads had to say goodbye to them, because most of the adults were going to climb mountains for some days – only up to the snow bit ’cause they might fall off. Some children cried because they didn’t want their parents to leave. That’s the end of it.

Wild technology

Me: We’ve got to go to the Post Office to pick up a parcel.

D: Is it for me?

Me: No, I think it’ll be for me.

D: How do you know?

Me: Because I ordered some printer cartridges a couple of days ago and they said that they would be delivered in a couple of days.

D: Printer party juice?

Me: Printer CARTRIDGES – but I think ‘printer party juice’ sounds much better – like the printer has a party all over the paper!

D: I wish it was for me.

Making the rules up
October 8, 2012

D: Who was that woman at the front door?

Me: She wanted me to vote for her.

D: What’s ‘vote’?

Me: It when you choose one thing instead of another.

D: What did she want you to choose?

Me: There’s a group of people in this country who make the rules, and she wanted me to choose her, so that she could help to make the rules.

D: Oh. Are you going to choose her?

Me: I don’t know. We could make our own rules – I think we’d be good at that. What do you think?

D: I don’t think I’d be very good at that – remember that sometimes I get naughty? But I’ll try and be good.

Party mad

Daniel’s 5th birthday, pre-party – Oct 2012

D: I haven’t used purple because Daniel hates purple – he said.
That’s Daniel [bottom right, sideways on] – he’s got some candy in one hand and a cupcake in the other hand.
He’s got a red hat with a ‘5’ on it.
There’s lots of people and there’s 2 tables with lots of food on them [top, centre and left].
There’s some ‘X’ marks the spots and a balloon man’s been blowing up balloons.

Prior to Leo’s 6th birthday party – Sept 2012

D: That’s Leo; he’s got a costume on, and that’s orange and brown face paint – he’s a lion [top right].
That’s someone who’s come dressed as a pirate, and they’re bowling [top left]. They’re the skittles [in red and blue, top, centre].
That’s a table with some food on it [beneath the pirate] – there’s some cheesy puffs [in yellow] and there’s two peppers [in red].
That’s someone who didn’t come as anything because they forgot [in blue, left of centre].
That’s two people who came dressed as Spiderman, and there’s a spider [bottom left].
That’s Leo, sat at the table, eating his food and there’s lots of food and drinks all around the table [just below centre].
That’s a table with all his presents on [bottom, right of centre] and they’re balloons [in red, right].

A smashing party
August 9, 2012

D: What’s Greek Night?

Me: It’s like a party and there will be greek music and greek dancing.

D: Awesome! I LOVE parties! Can we go?

Me: If you can stay awake until late – it doesn’t  start until 9.30.

D: I can, I CAN! What’s greek dancing?

Me: You’ll have to wait and see, it’s a special kind of dancing. Sometimes they even smash plates!

D: Why do they smash plates? – It’s naughty to break things.

Me: I don’t know, it’s just one of the things they do in a different country to celebrate. YOU shouldn’t do it.

D: Why?

Me: Because they’re adults and they buy the plates, so they’re allowed to smash them.

D: Do they break the ones we use for breakfast and tea?

Me: No – they use special ones.

D: …I don’t want to see the greek dancing, I think I’ll go to bed.
