Can’t beat a bit of constructive feedback! The adjudicator at this year’s Milton Keynes Music Festival was very good – through her group evaluation, ideas and tips for a top performance, all the young musicians learnt that: a ‘phrase’ is a musical sentence; ‘articulation’ is the pronunciation of the notes – clearly defined or slurred through use of the tongue; ‘dynamics’ determine how quick or slow, loud or soft; try and rid yourself of the music stand if you can; and to bow and appreciate an audience’s applause.
Also that musical language like ‘tempo’ is Italian. Dylan would like to know why Italian – any offers on an answer?

For the past three weeks in Design & Technology club, the children’s challenge has been to design and make a scooter. Of course, Dylan decided he wanted to make one that was also a stringed instrument. Apparently it took most of the first session to explain it to the teacher, and convince her that it WOULD fulfil the brief and be a scooter.
It actually looks a bit like a Segway…

D: I love it when it’s a country name day! When it’s a country name day and we’re all dressed up in the colours and decorated, that means we’re swapping classes and we only learn about one thing. But then in the afternoon we stop because we run out of teachers.
Mr T goes onto Google Earth and shows us where the country is. And then we go to Mrs W and she usually has some of that country food. We have to write on the list whether we like it or not.
Then in Mrs D’s class, we usually do some of that type of country dancing – so we’ll be doing some Turkey dancing.
Me: Sounds great. Turkey dancing – is it like Chicken dancing? Like this?
D: Ha yes! A turkey on a phone, dancing! Do you know what I used to think phones were for? I used to think they were just for talking. But, now I get to use your old one, now I know there’s more than one thing you do on them!

17th Feb 2014: Tonight’s football and music score
The inaugural meeting of our exclusive Football + Music Club resulted in a score of Dylan 8, Becky 6. (With just a little bit trickery going on!)
On his cello, Dylan practiced Auntie Daisy Goes Crazy whilst I identified Eat Apples Daily, Grow Big Ears – on the guitar.

8th Jan 2014: Operation Hopscotch
I didn’t manage to get outside much today – too busy with our Toastmasters Club meeting and collecting a 2nd hand Amp so I can play my EWI – Electronic Wind Instrument – again (the last amp has a disconnected plug stuck in the input socket due to an accident involving a microphone, a small child and temporary loss of balance). So here’s a humorously healthy picture, courtesy of Miranda Hart – highly relevant and with which I agree wholeheartedly 🙂 I believe it’s even zoom-able…

Sing!
July 20, 2013
Boy: I remembered one of the other songs we sang in the playground today – not Over The Rainbow or Doe a Deer. I don’t know what it’s called though – shall I sing it to you?
Mum: Yes, go on!
Boy: [sings]
Every day, we learn and play,
Finding ways to get along,
Finding out what  life’s about,
Everybody moving on!
That’s all I can remember.

Son: It’s sunny! And I know why it’s sunny. In singing assembly yesterday we sang the Spring Song, because it wasn’t quite ready and we has to help it. That’s why it’s sunny today!

D: I heard Gangnam Style at Edward’s house today – he’s got a CD player like me and it was on there – “Oop, oop, oop, Gangnam Style!” Oh look! I put my pyjama bottoms on inside-out and both my legs are stuck in one hole! Wouldn’t it be funny if, in the pictures for Gangnam Style, the man did that – and put his pyjama bottoms on inside out, with both his legs in one hole?
