Today we explored the changing states of sugar and chocolate by making Strawberry and Chocolate Valentine Fudge:
- 450g caster sugar
- 100g unsalted butter
- 170g evaporated milk
- Half a teaspoon of Strawberry flavouring
- Few drops of pink food colouring
- Melted chocolate for topping off
Can highly recommend!
Happy Valentines Day 🙂

Dylan wanted to add a new product to his sweet shop range, after a slight lull in business activity. In line with the ‘A Million Hands’ initiative by The Scout Association, he came up with the following design:
We worked on the development of a resistant mould that would accommodate hot, liquid sugar (using silicone sealant, oil and cornflour), and today managed to realise his design into these prototypes:

Left to right: Strawberry lolly with fizzy strawberry sherbet; Lemon lolly with fizzy lemon sherbet; Chocolate lolly with fizzy lemon sherbet. We still need to work out the costings..

On last weekend’s shopping trip Dylan wanted to get me something for Mother’s Day, so I set the budget and closed my eyes whilst he hunted for something and hid it in the trolley, telling the check-out person at the end to hide it too!
I’ve just retrieved ‘the chocolates’ from the bookshelf in Dylan’s room, as instructed. Surprise! ❤

Son: What do you think of my hat?
Mum: Which hat?
Son: My imaginary hat.
Mum: Ah – yes, It’s a fantastic hat.
Son: Everyone’s got an imaginary hat. We learnt about it at school today. When you look at something and think about it, it goes onto your hat.
Mum: When you look at what?
Son: Like that picture on the wall. I look at that picture and now it’s on my hat.
Mum: Ah – I see. Does the hat change?
Son: Whenever you look at things yes. If you don’t imagine them then it doesn’t change. Everyone in the world’s got one. But don’t make it too big otherwise you won’t fit through the door.
Mum: So is there just one thing at a time on your hat?
Son: No, you can think of all sorts of things at once and they come onto your hat all together.
Guess what? At school one person said “ice cream” for their hat, but that would just melt in the sun wouldn’t it? And it would drip all down their face!
And another person said “chocolate”, but that would get wet from the rain and melt in the sun, so Mrs W said, “Only take it out in the cloud!”

Easter egg hunt – March 2013
It’s our garden and you’ve got to try and find the Easter eggs. But watch out, because some are FALSE Easter eggs!
That’s a flower on the table, that big tall purple one is a big apple tree and there’s grass all around to hunt for eggs in. They’re the steps to the gym [left], that’s the weight lifter in the gym [far left, on top of the door], but instead of weights at each end, it’s got EASTER EGGS!

D: Go out of the kitchen, mum – I’m going to decorate your birthday cake all on my own – you’re NOT ALLOWED to see!
Me: OK.
…
[Quite a while later]
D: This is not good, mum – you’re not going to like it; I tipped the silver balls into the pot with the gold balls in it. Then I tipped them all into the empty pot, then back into the other pot, then back, then back, then back. Then some of the balls fell out – not all of them – and they went onto the floor and now I can’t find them.
Me: Have you decorated the cake yet?
D: No.
…
[Quite a while later]
D: There. That’s a piece of white string, with a chocolate chip balloon on top [left of centre], that’s a silver balloon with some gold string [centre, top], and they’re gold and silver presents [bottom].

Robot Treasure Hunt – Sept 2012
D: That’s a robot and he’s doing an Easter Egg hunt – that’s a chocolate ladybird, and that’s a chocolate egg [in green, bottom right]. That’s a crocodile [in black, bottom right] and that’s a flag to start the race [centre].

D: I LOVE this pudding – it’s the best ice cream ever! I’m going to call it… ‘Chocolate Ice Cream Strawberry World’. No, I got that the wrong way round. It’s ‘Chocolate Strawberry Ice Cream World’ – no, I mean ‘Chocolate Sauce Ice Cream Strawberry World’.
Me: ‘…With a Wafer’?
D: No, I’ve ate the wafer.
…There’s only ONE strawberry left – now it’s just ‘Strawberry World’.
…Now it’s just ‘Spoon World’.
