Car conversations: handwriting stress
April 15, 2016

“Your day will be full of luck”
D received this message in a fortune cookie he was eating in the car, as we zipped from childminder’s to karate.

D: Well that’s great – not. There’s hardly any day left!

Me: But has your day felt lucky so far?

D: No! I got told off for my handwriting.

Me: Oh. Why did you get told off?

D: We were told to do our best, and I did my best, but my teacher said: “Dylan, you need to do something about your handwriting. We can’t do it – only you can do it.” She said it in the voice that told me she was really annoyed with me and was telling me off.

Me: What are you supposed to do about it and when? Just try harder whenever you write anything?

D: I don’t know – I did my best. You told me my handwriting wasn’t that bad.

Me: I said your handwriting’s a lot better than a lot of students’ work that I see in secondary school. Your handwriting isn’t GOOD, but it’s certainly a lot tidier than some that I see. I’ll show you some examples and you can see if you like? Shall I tell you WHY teachers get so worked up about handwriting?

D: Why?

Me: Because, rightly or wrongly – people will make a judgement about other people based on presentation.

D: What’s ‘judgement’?

Me: So, if a new teacher was to look at your work and, even if it used some great words and sentences, if it looks messy, they might take one look and – without even reading it – they might think you’re no good. Sometimes it won’t matter what words you use. I don’t mean YOU specifically – anyone. It’s the same with speaking and giving speeches. You know about percentages? Well, if you write the best speech in the world, using the best words and what’s actually IN the speech is amazing, if you don’t present it well with body language and how you communicate verbally, people won’t listen. I think it’s something crazy like 80% body language and HOW you speak and only 20% based on the actual words and WHAT you are saying that people remember.

D: Well I think that’s wrong. It should be about what words you use.

Me: I agree, but that’s just how people are.

D: But I can speak well.

Me: I know you can, and don’t you forget it – it’s one of your strengths.

D: So you’re telling me that if I write really bad words, but they look nice that I will get a “Well done, good work.”?

Me: Well, why don’t you test it out? I love testing things like that out – sometimes testing makes me feel better if someone is saying something I don’t agree with.

D: Won’t I get told off?

Me: Don’t write rude words, and promise that you will only do it for this and not give up on your amazing words which are your strength… but it would be an interesting test.

D: I wouldn’t write rude words! I’m going to do that. It makes me feel better when someone says something bad about me and I know it’s not the truth and so I can answer back saying something smarter – that makes me feel really good.

Saving Santa?
December 26, 2015

Q’s about Santa this year:
Q: I know I sent him a letter, but… How can Santa still be alive if he’s been around forever?

A: He’s magical.

Q: How can he fly around the world and deliver presents to every house in one night?

A: He’s magical and he has a time machine. He can go wherever he wants whenever he wants.

Q: Why does Santa not freeze to death in the North Pole?

A: Because he has that big furry jacket, the hat, the boots and the mittens. And he’s magical.

Q: Why do all those guys dress up as fake Santas?

A: Because they’re Santa’s helpers in the run-up to Christmas – Santa needs helpers everywhere to help get people into the Christmas spirit.

Q: How come all the films are different about what Santa does? I mean, how does Santa get down the chimney in everyone’s house?

A: Not every house has that sort of a chimney; so some parents might leave the back door open… And he’s magical and can go where he wants.

Q: Why did I see you putting the presents in my room?

A: You didn’t – you must have dreamt that.

Q: How does Santa get all the presents? They’re not made by him because it says on the packets who they’re made by. Santa can’t just go to the shop and buy things can he?

A: Santa’s magical and can do whatever he wants. He can also go wherever he wants. He’s a saintly being – ‘Saint Nicholas’ is his other name. ‘Santa’ is Italian for ‘Saint’.

Me: Why don’t we put your new music CD on?

D: Which CD?

Me: You know – the new ‘Now’ album I bought you.

D: Oh yes! … You bought me those Santa presents didn’t you? The ‘Now’ CD came with the other reindeer wrapping paper presents.

Preparing for Palaeontology?
February 23, 2014

D: I’m going to read EVERYTHING there is about dinosaurs – if it says anything about ‘dinosaurs’ I’m going to read it!
Me: Do you want to be a Palaeontologist?
D: What’s that?
Me: Someone who finds out all about dinosaurs and prehistoric times.
D: Yes! That’s what I want to be! I want to be a Palaeontologist. Can you book me onto a lesson PLEEEASE mum? Can you find some training for kids to be Palaeontologists and if it’s not too much money can you book me on? I REALLY want to do that.
Me: I’ll look into it…

So far, we’ve visited the Natural History Museum (last Oct), D has excavated 6 dinos from a block of plaster, helped a T-Rex to fly and watched the BBC’s Walking with Dinosaurs series twice over. He’s now deeply into some library books on the subject.

…Anyone know of any low cost, local Kid’s Palaeontology sessions?!

BookLog

Dylan managed to read 22 books (1 of which he wrote himself!) during last week’s sponsored read, in aid of refurbishment of the school library (to involve self-service shelving units, new books and possibly some digging facilities). Thank you to his school, his childminder and his sponsors (you know who you are – Dylan has received every message XXX).

ART BOOK COVER

There’s all the things I liked drawing best at Art Club this term: There’s the peacock [top left]; they’re the Russian dolls [centre]; there’s the sun and the mountains; they’re all the children at school; that’s the hand with all the decorations on it; that’s a turtle [in red and green] and that’s the Egyptian writing [bottom right].

Do something exciting
July 19, 2013

dosomethingBoy: Today nobody at school listened to me and I REALLY needed to tell them something!

Mum: What did you need to tell them?

Boy: I can’t remember, but NOBODY would listen!

Mum: Well, it’s a hot day and sometimes people get a bit grumpy on hot days and might not want to listen as much.

Boy: But I listened to THEM!

Mum: Sometimes you’ll just have days when you feel like nobody’s listened, unfortunately it’s part of life. I have that sometimes – some days I feel like nobody’s listened to me at work. What do you think I should do then?

Boy: [Thinks for a while]… You should get them to stop thinking about the hot sun by doing something exciting.

Mum: What might that be?

Boy: You could ask them if they wanted something to eat. Or to drink.

Mum: Sounds like a good plan – they’d have to listen if their mouth was full!

BE ACTIVE
Mum: Is that someone juggling [bottom right]?
Boy: No! That’s someone sweating because they’re running! They’re on a path and they’ve got to all the way to that treasure island over there [bottom left]. And do you want to know what that person’s doing [middle]? I changed the ‘A’ into a mountain and the person is sliding down a really steep mountain – weeeeeee!
