BookLog

Dylan managed to read 22 books (1 of which he wrote himself!) during last week’s sponsored read, in aid of refurbishment of the school library (to involve self-service shelving units, new books and possibly some digging facilities). Thank you to his school, his childminder and his sponsors (you know who you are – Dylan has received every message XXX).

Day 27: Brilliant books

27th Jan 2014: Brilliant books
In preparation for this week’s Sponsored Read in aid of the school library, we’ve stocked up on a few books from the local Willen Hospice second-hand book shop. Between school, childminder’s and home, the goal is at least 20 books between today and the end of Sunday – a doddle! :/
I wonder what we can do with the books once they’ve been read? Hmmmm…

Day 21: So many books, so little time!
January 21, 2014

As the paper sponsorship form didn’t make it home, and we’ve only got a few days left, I thought the following post could contribute to the Post-a-Healthy-Picture 30 day challenge!

Dylan’s doing a sponsored read with his school next week – all donations, however small, gratefully received. As the link is generic to all, please do leave a personalised message on the donation page, on this blog post, or on the iWantMarbles Facebook page – or all 3; he’ll be reading them!

Without knowing what activities they’ll be getting up to with school, our goal for outside of school is at least 2 per day (1 at our lovely childminder’s and 1 at home). Will keep you posted!

“We Love Reading” Sponsored Read 2014
A topical fundraiser to help raise money for the school library, the school will be holding a Sponsored Read during the week 27th-31st January. All children from the Nursery Class to Year 2 will be invited to join in what we hope will be a fun, exciting, educationally-relevant fundraiser for the school whilst fostering the love of books! It will be the same week as the Stony Words festival and we’re hoping some local Professional Storytellers will be joining us to add to the fun.

During the Sponsored Read, the children will be asked to read stories by themselves, with the help of an adult, or have stories read to them both in school and at home – everything counts, the main aim is to really focus on reading and listening to stories…as many as possible! From building self-esteem, communication skills, imagination, increasing attention span, and learning about the world, the benefits of reading (especially with parents/carers) is well documented so we hope everyone will be able to take part.

The children will be given a Reading Log at the start of the Sponsored Read in which to note down the books they’ve read, or had read to them, and all children that take part will receive a certificate at the end.

An interesting article about the benefits of reading for kids: http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2013/09/30/5-benefits-of-reading-for-kids_n_4018741.html

A word in your shell-like…

A WORD IN YOUR SHELL-LIKE

Son: What’s that? [Points to iTuneU app on my smartphone]

Mum: It’s called iTunesU. It’s where you can get books and information into the phone.

Son: No, what’s it a picture of?

Mum: It’s a hat. It’s called a ‘mortar board‘. It’s what people wear when they graduate from University. It’s our Graduation Day today! There will be lots of people at my work wearing funny hats!

Son: What’s ‘Graduation Day’?

Mum: It’s a day when we celebrate that people have finished their courses.

Son: What’s a ‘course’?

Mum: It’s when people decide to learn about certain things, and gather lots of information. Then they write about what they’ve learned in books and things. And today we’re celebrating because they’ve learned what they wanted to learn to make them better at doing things. Some of them will get prizes too for doing really well at certain things.

Son: What prizes will they get?

Mum: I’m not sure.

Son: How many people is there?

Mum: I think there are about 20 in our part of the day.

Son: Well… [looks around] You can give them some of my shells from Crete. I’ll give you three and you’ll have to find something else at your work for the rest of the people.

Turning everything upside down

TheTwits[Mum walks into bedroom and finds Son doing a very bad version of a headstand on the bed – where his knees are still on the bed!]

Mum: What are you doing?

Son: Trying to see if I get The Dreaded Shrinks.

[Influenced by his TWO reads of Roald Dahl’s The Twits, illustrated by Quentin Blake.]

Fooling the scales
April 23, 2013

foolingscalesMum: What are you doing?

Son: [Squatting on the bathroom scales] I’m trying to be heavier.

Mum: That won’t work – you need to be carrying a big pile of heavy books, or some suitcases.

Son: Or a cherry!

Mum: I don’t think a cherry will be heavy enough to make a difference.

Son: I know – a big thorn bush!

Mum: That would be a bit prickly to hold.

Son: You could hold it by the stalk at the end?

Mum: I suppose, but it would still be a bit awkward.

Son: Maybe I could hold a big dinosaur then?

Mum: If you can find one.

Son: Oh yes, because they all got killed…

The importance of expression
January 30, 2013

expressionD: I’m on level 7 books now! Mrs V said I did really well and I used EXPRESSION in my voice, so I moved up!
Me: Fantastic – well done Dylan!
D: Thanks. Callum’s on level 7, so I’m on the same now.
Me: That’s really great. What level are other people on?
D: I can’t tell you that – otherwise I’d still be talking at bed time!
Me: OK – well, I’m really looking forward to hearing the ‘expression’ in your reading at bed time!

Half the story
September 14, 2012

D: I’ve got something that’s SOOOOOO exciting!

Me: Go on.

D: You know my reading books? Well I’ve moved up – I’m on number 4 now, and they’re BLUE! I’m not on the yellow ones any more.

Me: Well done! Were you happy to move up?

D: Yes – I was SOOOOO excited! I only read half the book to my teacher – I didn’t even finish it – and she said I could go to number 4, so I RAN to get a number 4 book and I put it in my book bag STRAIGHT away!
