Saving Santa?
December 26, 2015

Q’s about Santa this year:
Q: I know I sent him a letter, but… How can Santa still be alive if he’s been around forever?

A: He’s magical.

Q: How can he fly around the world and deliver presents to every house in one night?

A: He’s magical and he has a time machine. He can go wherever he wants whenever he wants.

Q: Why does Santa not freeze to death in the North Pole?

A: Because he has that big furry jacket, the hat, the boots and the mittens. And he’s magical.

Q: Why do all those guys dress up as fake Santas?

A: Because they’re Santa’s helpers in the run-up to Christmas – Santa needs helpers everywhere to help get people into the Christmas spirit.

Q: How come all the films are different about what Santa does? I mean, how does Santa get down the chimney in everyone’s house?

A: Not every house has that sort of a chimney; so some parents might leave the back door open… And he’s magical and can go where he wants.

Q: Why did I see you putting the presents in my room?

A: You didn’t – you must have dreamt that.

Q: How does Santa get all the presents? They’re not made by him because it says on the packets who they’re made by. Santa can’t just go to the shop and buy things can he?

A: Santa’s magical and can do whatever he wants. He can also go wherever he wants. He’s a saintly being – ‘Saint Nicholas’ is his other name. ‘Santa’ is Italian for ‘Saint’.

Me: Why don’t we put your new music CD on?

D: Which CD?

Me: You know – the new ‘Now’ album I bought you.

D: Oh yes! … You bought me those Santa presents didn’t you? The ‘Now’ CD came with the other reindeer wrapping paper presents.

Glass half empty or half full?

Glass half empty or half full?

Dylan: Can I have a slush puppy?

Mum: Not at the moment. I’ve only just bought you an ice cream.

Dylan: It’s not fair!

Mum: It’s more than fair – I’ve not said no; just not right now. You’re wanting everything at once and things don’t work that way.
OK – if you have a drink and the level of the drink is half the height of the glass, would you see it as half empty or half full?

Dylan: [Thinks for a long time] Half empty?

Mum: There’s no right answer, but it shows how you can think about things in different ways. If you think the glass is half empty, you might always be sad and looking for more, which may never come. You might forget about what you’ve already got too – which will already be more than some other people have. If you think of it as the glass is half full, you’ll be glad that you’ve got some lovely drink and appreciate it more. It might even taste nicer! Do you understand?

Dylan: Yes, the glass is half full… But I’m only half glad about it.

Singing the Spring Song

Fairy Liaison Officer
February 18, 2013

fairyliaisonD: Mum. Did you know – you can’t be a fairy.

Me: Why can’t I?

D: Because you’re too big – you have to be smaller than me to be a fairy.

Me: Oh – that’s a shame. I wanted to be a fairy.

D: Well, you might be able to be one – you need to talk to Auntie Vicky. She knows them. She told me the stories from when she was a little kid:
One day, Auntie Vicky didn’t know where the gravestone was – with her friend – every single day, so she wrote a letter to the fairies and the dog took the letter to the fairies and the fairies got the lawn mower out and mowed the grass and so Auntie Vicky and her friend followed the path and went straight to the grave – it was a really small grave. And you know how grass takes an extraORDINARILY long time to grow?

Me: Yes.

D: Well, the next day, it had all grown back – straight away!
Also, when she was little, she really wanted her toys to come to life, so she drawed hearts, coloured them in, and cut them out and put them in her toys. And in the middle of the night, when she was still a kid, she woke up, creeped down the stairs without her mother noticing, and all the toys had come to life, they could speak, they could move about – and she realized, it must have been the fairies that did this!
So, that’s why you have to ask Auntie Vicky about being a fairy.
So mum, one day, can I put paper hearts in all my toys?

Blue God

Diwali, Festival of Light – Nov 2012

D: It’s what we’re learning about at school. It’s a God thing.

Me: What sort of God thing?

D: I can’t remember – it starts with ‘V’. [Diwali]

Me: Who is it a picture of?

D: I copied it from a picture that had lots of gods in it. It’s the blue one. I can’t remember which one he’s called… [Krishna]
