Crazy fish out of water
June 5, 2013

crazyfishSon: Next year, after this holiday – what’s the place called that we’re going to?

Mum: Gran Canaria.

Son: Yes, after Gran Canaria, can we go back to Crete?

Mum: We’ll see. I’d like to visit different countries. We could go to Egypt and you might be able to swim well enough to come snorkelling and see all the pretty fish under the water.

Son: But what about the sharks?

Mum: You don’t need to worry about sharks.

Son: I just imagined something! I imagined that we were in the sea and a shark was chasing us and we ran out of the sea onto the beach and the shark followed us – he stood on his flippers and walked onto the beach and then started singing “Gangnam Style” with a microphone!

Holiday in Crete

Holiday in Crete, August 2012

D: That’s you – in red – and that’s me – in yellow. That’s another person, and that’s another person with a really small head, and that’s another person [all top right]. That’s a person who’s pretending to be strong [middle-ish with triangles for arms]. That’s the sea at the bottom, with a BIG wave. That’s some yellow sand, and that’s some black sand – but I didn’t have a black, so I had to do it in brown.

Staying on holiday
August 19, 2012

D: I wish I could live in this country [Crete].
Me: Why’s that?
D: You get to hear the crickets; go to Star Beach every day; see if the cleaners have been; go to the mini market; have ice creams every day – even Scooby Doo ones…
Me: I wish we could stay too, but we can’t.
D: Why?
Me: I’ve run out of money.
D: Oh man! It’s not fair!
Me: You need money to stay here and I’ve run out. Have you got any?
D: Maybe they’ll let us stay here forever for free!
Me: that’s not the way it works.
D: …I’ve got the rest of my ice cream money?
Me: That’s not enough.
D: Well have you got some for half?
Me: Nope – I’ve got enough for tomorrow and the next day and that’s all.
D: It’s OK, because if we haven’t got the right money they’ll give us change!

A Cretian beach

D: There’s the sand, in yellow, with a red ‘X marks the spot’; and that’s the land, in red, and that’s some fishes there, that I sort of – went over with blue.
