A real changing chameleon
July 13, 2013

changedchameleonA REAL CHANGING CHAMELEON

It’s a chameleon, but I’m a bit disappointed because its tail’s changed – I didn’t paint a purple tail. I painted all different colours in that curly bit. And I painted its sides red and white like a candy cane. And I gave it a red head. And I didn’t paint its feet all multi-coloured. It’s changed colours!

Too much talk
May 19, 2013

toomuchtalkSon: Our teacher read us a story today and it was called Too Much Talk. The story happened in Africa and it went like this:

There was a farmer and he was going to dig up some yams.
And then the yams talked and then the dog talked, so he ran UPhill and DOWNhill and DOWNhill and UPhill, unti he came to a fisherman.
The fisherman said, “Why are you running in the heat of the day?”
“Well,” said the farmer, “first my yam talked, then my dog talked.”
“Oh,” said the fisherman, “that can’t happen!”
“Oh yes it can!” said the fish.
“Ahhhhh!” Screamed the fisherman and they ran UPhill and DOWNhill, DOWNhill and UPhill until they came to a weaver.
The weaver said, “Why are you running in the heat of the day?”
“Well,” said the farmer and the fisherman, “first the yam talked, then the dog talked, then the fish talked.”
“Oh,” said the weaver, “that can’t happen!”
“Oh yes it can!” said the cloth.
“Ahhhhh!” Screamed the weaver and they ran UPhill and DOWNhill, DOWNhill and UPhill until they came to a swimmer.
The swimmer said, “Why are you running in the heat of the day?”
“Well,” said the farmer and the fisherman and the weaver, “first the yam talked, then the dog talked, then the fish talked, then the cloth talked.”
“Oh,” said the swimmer, “that can’t happen!”
“Oh yes it can!” said the wave.
“Ahhhhh!” Screamed the swimmer and they ran UPhill and DOWNhill, DOWNhill and UPhill until they came to a chief.
The chief said, “Why are you running in the heat of the day?”
“Well,” said the farmer and the fisherman and the weaver and the swimmer, “first the yam talked, then the dog talked, then the fish talked, then the cloth talked and then the wave talked.”
“Oh,” said the chief, “well, too much talk – go away before I throw you all into jail!”
So they dashed off backed to their houses.
The chief sat in his chair and said, “imagine that! A talking yam, a talking dog, a talking fish, a talking cloth, a talking wave – that can’t happen!”
“Oh yes it can!” said the chair.
“Ayyyyyy!” Screamed the chief and he ran UPhill and DOWNhill, DOWNhill and UPhill and he was never seen again.

How funny is that – that the chair talked to him?!

Mum: That’s very well remembered.

Son: Can you think what was repeated over and over again in the story?

Mum: The hill.

Son: Good – yes. What else?

Mum: Talking?

Son: Good – yes. What else?

Mum: I don’t know.

Son: First!

AN EXCELLENT LOOK-OUT
It’s a giraffe.

Zebras

D: They’re all zebras – that’s a pattern.

Me: Why are they all on top of one another?

D: They’re not! They’re just lined up. Do you know why that one’s a bit further back? ‘Cause he’s a bit slow.

Giraffe

D: It’s a giraffe.

Me: It’s very colourful.

D: Yes. But looking at it it’s really good. That bit’s really colourful. That one’s like blood going into your body and going in to the yellow dots. That one there’s very spotty. That bit there’s all joined up together.

Rabbit road trip

Rabbit rescue – Mar 2013

We all had to do this – it’s when you draw something you find on your doorstep and you don’t know where to take it. I found a rabbit on my doorstep [left]. And I decided that I needed to take some pizza, a backpack and a map [centre]. And I took the rabbit to Africa [right].

A lift-the-flap picture – Jan 2013

D: Look – it’s you under the flap, mummy! I didn’t have time to put your hair on though.

Me: That’s lovely. The pattern on the paper looks like giraffe fur.

D: It is – I didn’t know we weren’t supposed to use the giraffe paper, but Mrs V said it was all right.

Africa goes global

Africa – January 2013
D: I was drawing them at Vikki’s and I thought – I’ll cut out a cactus out for my mum. And then I thought I’ll cut the others out for my dad and Nanny and Grandpa when I go there tomorrow.

Me: That’s nice. Why were you drawing trees and cacti?

D: I was drawing Africa – Africa’s got lots of trees and cactuses.

Me: Did you draw anything else in the picture of Africa, other than trees and cacti?

D: Yes, and some water – the water was in the shape of Africa.

Me: This shape here, on this globe?

D: That’s not Africa – it’s got lots of different coloured shapes in it.

Me: That’s because they’re all countries and Africa is a continent.

D: What’s a continent?

Me: It’s a group of countries.

D: Oh. Oops – no. I did the water round, like that, with a bumpy bit there [draws it in the air] – I just made it up!

Food for thought
September 30, 2012

Me: Did you have your Harvest Festival Assembly today?

D: Yes – in the hall. All the food was put out on the tables in the hall. I could see my pot of fruit, but I couldn’t see my tin.

Me: Ah – did they put all the food together on the table?

D: Yes.

Me: And where’s the food going?

D: To those countries that don’t have any food. Which countries are they?

Me: Some parts of Africa, some parts of India…

D: Some parts of China?

Me: Possibly.

D: Some parts of Crete?

Me: I don’t think they’ll be going to Crete, I think Crete has enough food – it had food when we went there, didn’t it?

D: But there might be another part of Crete that doesn’t have food.

Me: True.

D: Where else? …Manchester?
